What is The Role of Kris in Aquino Administration?

Written on June 10, 2010 – 9:43 pm | by Manny

Kris Aquino filed an indefinite leave on her showbiz career to help help fulfill her brother’s campaign promises. “We will pay it forward,” she said.

She will be distributing school supplies to some 10,000 grade school students in Aquino’s bailiwick, Tarlac. She’s also set to go to Cebu in the 3rd week of June and then go to Ormoc province. Kris said that she’s confident her brother will do well in the whole 6 years of his term.

“Of course there will be difficulties, but I know that my brother will be very capable and I look forward to a much better Philippines for all of us,” she said. She also prepared herself for all the criticism her family will face.

“The responsibility now is so much greater kasi malaki talaga, alam ko, ang expectation sa Pangulo ng Pilipinas and sa pamilya niya. But I know so much better now, nung nanalo ang mom I was younger than my son Josh, ngayon mas mature naman, mas handa,” the popular host said.

What’s Myth And What’s Fact About Vegetables

Written on June 10, 2010 – 5:31 pm | by Manny

Some people say that it is healthier to eat raw veggies while others say the opposite. You may be surprised by the actual facts about these vegetables because there are several misconceptions when it comes to vegetables.

Here are some guides to what’s fact and what’s fiction when it comes to eating your veggies:

Myth #1: Fresh ones are more nutritious than frozen

Fact: Studies show that sometimes you can get more nutrients from frozen veggies but it depends on variety and how old the vegetables at your supermarket are. Produce starts losing nutrient quality as soon as it’s picked. Frozen veggies are preserved at their peak of freshness when they are most nutritious.

Myth #2: Cooked ones are less nutritious than raw

Fact: It depends on the vegetables. According to Marion Nestle, author of “What To Eat”, “Cooking destroys some nutrients, but it releases others. It destroys vitamin C and folic acid.” That is why it is not a great idea to cook oranges. However, cooking releases vitamin A and the nutrients in fiber and makes them easier to digest. Also, lycopene is easier to absorb by your body in cooked tomato sauce than from raw tomatoes.

Myth #3: Iceberg lettuce doesn’t have any nutrients

Fact: It’s hardly loaded with vitamins because it is mostly water but a large head does contain small amounts of protein, fiber and minerals. There are more nutrients from other greens that have less water such as romaine or butterhead lettuce but contrary to popular belief, iceberg lettuce does have some nutritional value.

Myth #4: Local ones are always cheaper

Fact: It is true that local produce are cheaper but there are no guarantees. Local food is not in any way subsidized so you are paying the real cost of producing food and the economies of scale are not there.

To find the best deals at your local market, shop at the end of the day when farmers are likely mark down their prices in order to get rid of their inventory. You can go early if selection is more important than price. You can ask your farmer for a volume discount if he or she doesn’t already offer one. Take advantage of special deals on bruised or overripe veggies.

Myth #5: Potatoes can make you fat

Fact: It’s not the potatoes, it’s how you cooked them and what you slather on your spuds. They are fat-free and low in calories. They contain a healthy dose of fiber which can make you feel satisfied for longer and help you lose weight.

Myth #6: Bagged salads are squeaky clean

Fact: Think again! Consumer Reports tests found bacteria that are “common indicators of poor sanitation and fecal contamination” in 39% of the 208 packages of salad greens it tested. It didn’t find E. coli 0157:H7, listeria, or other disease-causing bacteria in its samples. It is best to give greens a good rinse to remove residual soil before eating them.

Myth #7: Farmer’s markets only have organics

Fact: It doesn’t mean that veggies being sold at a farmer’s market are all organic. It must be certified organic by the U.S. Department of Agriculture for a guarantee that it was grown without synthetic fertilizers and pesticides.

The New Philippine President Proclaimed

Written on June 9, 2010 – 10:52 pm | by Manny

Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III becomes the 15th president of the Republic of the Philippines. The son of the two democratic icons Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino II and former president Corazon Aquino is “The new Aquino” who won convincingly in the country’s first automated and fastest elections in Philippine history.

The people rejoiced right after the proclamation of the new President and Vice President was announced by the Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile and Speaker of the House Prospero Nograles. This is truly a remarkable experience of my life as I witness the many hopes of the Filipinos rising above all.

Change is now chasing us and I hope we grab that opportunity to become a great nation. May the Lord bless our new president and his administration and may He bless us all.

Below are some of the quotable quotes during the proclamation of President-elect Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino III and Vice President-elect Jejomar Binay at the House of Representatives on June 9, 2010.

  • Sen. Jose “Jingoy” Estrada quoting his father former president “Joseph Estrada” who has finally accepted defeat: “I congratulate President-elect Benigno C. Aquino III on his proclamation as the duly elected President of the Republic of the Philippines. I sincerely bow to the will of our people with the firm belief that our democracy remains alive and strong today.”
  • Sen. Aquilino Pimentel while delivering his speech: “His parents, Senator Ninoy and President Cory must be smiling with parental pride in their heavenly abode over the electoral triumph of their only son.” And, “PCOS stands for President Cory’s Only Son.”
  • Aquino’s sister, Pinky Abellada saying in an interview: “I welcome criticisms especially if it’s constructive. I’m humble enough to admit not having perfect knowledge all the time.”
  • President-elect Noynoy Aquino: “I welcome criticisms especially if it’s constructive. I’m humble enough to admit not having perfect knowledge all the time.”
  • Makati Mayor-elect Jun Binay on the relationship of the Aquino-Binay family: We’re really friends. We have an open line.”

Slimming Your Grocery Bill

Written on June 9, 2010 – 3:28 pm | by Manny

Eating is an expensive habit and food consumes a significant portion of your budget. To help us get a grip on this tasty but often expensive cost-of-living, here are the ways on how to make your grocery bill slimmer.

  • Make a list and check it twice. Planning ahead can prevent impulse buying. You might also save on gas by being organized because you won’t need to make a second shopping trip to buy those forgotten items.
  • Stop clipping worthless coupons. Many coupons offer deals on highly packaged foods low in nutrition and high in unknown ingredients. It will be better for your health if you skip these worthless coupons and opting to pay a little bit more for whole foods. So, check the grocery coupons first before getting excited.
  • Watch the price scanner. It is common at any grocery stores to have mistakes on price scans and this can cost you additional payments. You have to watch your grocery prices scan and verify their accuracy at check-out in order to save money and may even score you free food because there are stores that will give you the item for free it it scans at the wrong price. It is up to you to spy the error.
  • Buy generic items instead over big brand names. Buying generic items can save you up to 10 to 50 percent on every shopping trip. It costs big bucks to market brand name products and you’re paying for that expense when you buy a food item with a recognizable label. If you compare the generic items to the branded ones, you will notice that they are not better than the less-advertised alternatives.
  • Buy dried beans in bulk not in the can. Buying dried beans in bulk and soaking them overnight is a frugal way to add protein to your diet without paying for the high cost of meat. Dried beans are very cheap and expand when soaked.

It takes a practice to look for simple ways to cut your everyday food expenses but the payoff can be huge. You can also save money on all your other living expenses if you keep tracking of your budget.

How To Feel Happier In A Natural Way

Written on June 9, 2010 – 11:41 am | by Manny

We’d get ourselves to a doctor if we feel ill but if the feeling is emotional like being worried, sad or hopeless, we are likely to resist seeking help for months or even years. According to a survey by the pharmaceutical company Eli Lily, it takes 6 years for people to get treated for mood disorders.

Suffering in silence is a bad idea and failing to seek help for anxiety or depression is downright dangerous. The longer you wait, the worse things can get. Untreated anxiety can turn into depression and vice versa.

Getting a diagnose is your first step to feel like yourself again. You can ask your physician for a referral to a psychologist or a psychiatrist or you can call your insurer to provide you a list of mental health providers and I can assure you that you will be glad that you did. You can also do this to a friend who is struggling emotionally.

It may take a while to decide to seek for treatment, whether it’s for you or your loved one, but for a while, making a few changes to your everyday habits can upgrade your outlook.

You can also try the changes below to lift your mood and to learn more about anxiety, depression and other emotional afflictions.

  • Phone a friend. Lonely folks are more likely to be depressed. Aim to strengthen bonds with at least 3 close friends to feel your happiest. Make friend dates by automating them, agree to meet at the gym twice a week or gather for a night of takeout and movie watching the first Friday of each month. You will keep your spirits high with a little help from your friends.
  • Have sweet dreams. It’s not just beauty sleep, it’s happy sleep. A solid 7 to 8 hours of rest is one of the most important things you can do for your emotional health. People who have insomnia are 5 times more likely to develop depression compared with those who are well-rested. To do that, you have to skip late-night TV and web surfing. Jot down your worries on a notepad so you can rest with a clear mind and try soothing stretches before turning in.
  • See the light. Depressed people who were exposed to a bright light for an hour upon waking up in the morning for 5 weeks experienced a 54% improvement in symptoms. Try flicking on an energy light as you read your morning paper or answer your email. Also, spending more time outside can also lift your spirits  and tame stress. Read a book on a park bench during your lunch break or bike to run your errands.
  • Sweat away sadness. Working out may be as effective at relieving mild to moderate depression as the antidepressant Zoloft. It stimulates the release of the feel-good chemical dopamine in our brain. Just a 30 minutes of walking a day can improve your mood. If you’d rather stretch than stride, even taking a yoga class has been proven to boost levels of neurotransmitter called gamma-aminobutyric acid that helps keep depression at bay.
  • Claim some quiet time. A moment of silence like meditation is as effective as medicine at reducing bouts of depression. Yoga is a great way to clear your mind. You can also try setting aside 10 minutes in the morning to deep breathing. If you want to stay in motion, try “walking meditation”. Stride slowly for 20 minutes sans iPod, stare at the ground 6 feet ahead and focus on the soles of your shoes lifting and dropping.
  • Eat good food. There are foods like fish that contains omega-3 fatty acids which help to enhance areas of the brains that affect our mood. Aim to eat a low-mercury swimmer like wild salmon, arctic char or sardines twice a week. Bake a spud on the side for a dose of vitamin B6, which lowers your depression risk risk. Foods which in folate such as spinach, beans and oranges are filled with blues-busting serotonin.

How To Keep Your Relationship Healthy

Written on June 7, 2010 – 3:35 pm | by Manny

According to a conventional relationship, being supportive during times of loss and sadness is a good way to strengthen  a relationship bond, however, celebrating good news with each other may mean even more.

Research shows that the happiest pairs are those who respond positively to their partners’ successes. And to strengthen your relationship more, you and your partner should break the following rules:

  • Show that you’re psyched. Try to give him emotional applause when he mentions getting a compliment and appreciate how he deals with annoying situations. According to clinical director for the Council Relationships in Philadelphia Michele Marsh, PhD, says that, “Interpersonal conflicts can be extra stressful for guys, so hearing that they handled one well can be very rewarding.”

Ask for details in order to make your response resonate beyond a pat “congrats” like “How did you find out?”, reaffirm how hard he worked on something, “Your hours of studying really paid off!” or you can escalate his excitement by pointing out a specific trait of his that played a part “I’m not surprised. You’re so tenacious!”

By acknowledging your partner’s participation in the larger picture shows another level of understanding, otherwise, it could sabotage things.

  • Get him boost you. You need a boost too. If a guy isn’t effusive about her partner’s achievements, it could be that he doesn’t know how valuable his support is. Give him a clue.

When something big is brewing, give him notice like by counting down the days or just say, “Something great happened, and I want to celebrate it with you.” That way  he’ll know that it is a big deal. And when he does share a success, let him know that you appreciated him being so happy for you.

If you say he did something right, he’ll remember that and be more likely to repeat it,” says Marsh. However, avoid appearing needy because most guys hate that.

  • Why it’s so powerful? According to clinical director for the Council Relationships in Philadelphia Michele Marsh, PhD, favorable feedback is better than just to flatter. “It validates accomplishments, but it also validates your relationship by showing that you get what’s important to each other.”

Couples who weren’t thrilled by each other’s good fortune were more likely to split up. Talk to your man about what occurred lets him relive a bit and vice versa. If you’re not stroked by what your guy considers a win, it conveys that you may be jealous, threatened or not interested.

How To Make Appliances Last

Written on June 6, 2010 – 11:51 am | by Manny

The secret to keep your appliances running smoothly is cleanliness, Many appliances malfunction due to “goo, dust  and gunk.” It doesn’t really take much time and effort to clean them. By doing so, you can extend their lifespan by years.

  • Ceiling Fan: You are in trouble If the blades are wobbling. This wears out the motor a lot faster. Dust off the tops of the blades and tighten the screws to make sure everything is locked into place.
  • Air conditioner: Its coils need to be cleaned every once in a while. Remove the filter cover and run a vacuum brush over the coils. Clean the filter or replace it depending on what kind of model you have.
  • Stove and Oven: Gas stoves need to be kept clean to ensure burners and igniters will keep on for years. Use a warm cloth and a bit of dish soap to get them spic and span. The super-high-temperature can be hard on your oven’s wiring and electrical components, so using the self-cleaning feature should be avoided. What you should do, after using the oven, wait until it’s cool enough to touch but still warm and wipe it down with a moist cloth.
  • Dishwasher: Take out the racks and check the corners and the rubber lining around the door for cracks and food residue. Use a sponge and plastic-bristled brush (don’t use metal as it can damage the machine) to clean your dishwasher. Check the owner’s manual and remove the spray arms and wash them with soap and water. Carefully remove the filter basket (if you have) and give it a rinse as well. Slide your hand in the filter hole to check for debris. Put them back together and run the machine empty with a bit of detergent.
  • Vacuum: Every year you should swap its filters and bags. For bagless model, wipe out the canister with a sponge. To test it’s suction power, try to vacuum up a bit of sand and see if it sucks up the majority of it. If so, your vacuum is in good shape and if not, take it to a local repair shop. If your vacuum got a motor issues, it is better to buy a new one because repairing it is more expensive.
  • Refrigerator: Like the air conditioner, its coils need cleaning as well. The coils tend to clogged with dust which can make it hard for the compressor fan to circulate fresh air. To make them clear, unplug the machine, get down on the floor and pull out the vent plate that covers the coils. Use a vacuum hose to clean the coils. Also, wipe down the door gasket as with a warm damp cloth to make sure there’s no sticky build-up there. This can cause the gasket to tear and inhibit your machine’s ability to refrigerate.
